the Gunpowder Treason and Plot. (which every English child learns to chant, along with its nursery rhymes)
This is the day we remember our national bogeyman, the Catholic Guy Fawkes, who was caught and arrested at midnight on the 4th November 1605, trying to blow up the Houses of Parliament which the Protestant King James I was going to open the next day. 36 barrels of gunpowder were found stacked in the cellar directly below the spot where the king would have been sitting. And we've been celebrating this foiled attempt ever since. We've got more fireworks going off tonight than I've heard on the 4th July, and bonfires are being burned all across the land with effigies of Guy Fawkes on them.
I have spent a lovely day with Tim and family, and he brought me home this evening.
