I fear Revolution is in the air. It has been announced that Buckingham Palace has fallen into disrepair and the extensive renovations needed are going to cost us, the hapless taxpayers, £369 million pounds ($455,535).
The first question that comes to my mind is "why hasn't it been maintained and works carried out on a regular basis, before it needs £369 million pounds worth of repair?
Secondly, Monarchists argue that replacing the monarchy with another head of state would not save money, because we (ie the taxpayers) would still have to protect and provide for a new figurehead. But would a new figurehead really need 775 rooms, 52 Royal and guest bedrooms, 188 staff bedrooms, 92 offices and 78 bathrooms? And - the point has been made that the British Monarchy costs more than 100 times the Irish President.
I rest my case.
