It is so called because in Victorian times - when we were a less egalitarian society - the servants of the aristocracy used to slave away all through Christmas to ensure their betters had a wonderful time and everything they needed, so on the day after Christmas they were given a day off to visit their families, and were given leftovers, or small presents in Boxes, to take home to them. How wonderful is that!!
It became a Bank (or Public) Holiday in 1871.
I had a good day because Jeremy came up from Surrey and took me out to a well known restaurant in Oxford, The Trout. Well known because it features in a popular tv series, Inspector Morse. It is situated in a lovely spot by the river, and has a resident peacock strolling around in the grounds. It is a shame it was raining because on a summer's day - or even a dry one - it is all rather idyllic. Jeremy brought Janet as well so that was nice.
Since they brought me home I have been reading, crocheting and watching television.
