Thursday/Friday

I think yesterday, Thursday, could be best summed up as a day of dining out.   I went along first to the monthly lunch at the church.  It doesn't have the wide range of dishes and variety I was used to at Emmanuel - it was lamb, mashed potatoes, green beans (which seem to be just as ubiquitous over here) and an orange and lemon trifle.   I'd introduced trifles into Emmanuel when providing desserts for the Wednesday meal, but the pear and chocolate variety which was very popular.

The speaker afterwards was a church member who engraves on glass.   He was setting up an exhibition of his work in the parish room, beautiful objects of engraved glass.   He said when he left school he didn't have any qualifications, he had even failed in A level Art, so while he was casting around wondering what to do, his mother suggested he become a glass engraver.

I was very bemused by this.   I'm sure if my children were struggling to decide what to do with the rest of their lives, engraving on glass would never in a thousand years have crossed my mind.   At the end of his talk he threw out the fact that he holds a Royal Warrant, so he is not just any old common-or-garden glass engraver, he engraves for the Queen.   He also mentioned that he has been to China four times this year, he is doing something there related to glass engraving.

So that was my first meal out for the day.   The second came when Tim and family invited me join them and Marie's parents, in a Chinese restaurant as Thursday was an important autumn festival which they celebrate.

So that was all very pleasant and today, Friday, I'm going to spend the weekend with Jeremy in Oxted, Surrey and I am sure that will be lovely.
