Well I went off to the city centre on Monday but foolishly left it a bit late to go and got caught up in the rush hour traffic coming back, and the bus drivers didn't take kindly to my shopping trolley I was manoeuvring past crowds of standing passengers.
One of the blessings of life at the moment is the time I've got to read, and I am into 1950s childhoods; you would be surprised how many folk my age are recording their memories, and as I am reading they are all flooding back.
So this is a bit of "remember when"............
Remember when postmen were smartly dressed and wore a shirt and tie, and peaked cap? Mine wears scruffy jeans and open neck shirt.
Window cleaners went round on a pushbike with their ladder and bucket. The window cleaner here the other day had a water truck parked round the back, and a 1000 metre hosepipe.
And paper boys..........all boys wanted to earn a bit of money with a paper round and the jobs were snapped up.
And who remembers when you went to the doctor's surgery, sat down in the waiting room and waited your turn. The doctor himself would retrieve your notes.....and the injections with big, reusable needles!
Who remembers being dragged to the dentist screaming and shouting - the anaesthetic gas, the hallucinatory dreams, waking up to bleeding gums and residual nausea?
And hospital wards with rows of beds and a nurse's table in the middle. When did that change, has the NHS brought in private rooms for all?
Policemen were respected, any miscreant would be given a clip round the ear. Imagine the law suits and headlines if a policeman hit a child today!!
I think I might be running out of space here but I will be back with more. I'm just getting into my stride.
