Tim picked me up to go to the 8 o'clock service. The weather, early on, was very damp and grey. I reminded myself that when it was 97 in Shawnee - which it is at the moment - I thought that was too hot and bright, and longed for damp and grey. It did brighten up though and the afternoon was very warm and pleasant.
After the service we had tea and coffee and buns in the parish room. I use the word 'buns' loosely, there was a selection of warm fruit buns, pain au chocolat, donuts, Scotch pancakes. For a long time I used to pick up the donuts for Emmanuel on Sunday mornings and wondered who went out for these, especially as the nearest shop, or bakery, is two miles away and wouldn't be open anyway. It seems a much better idea to have these refreshments after the service, when everyone is relaxed and sociable, rather than before hand as at Emmanuel, when most people are rushing in and heading for their pews.
In the early afternoon I went along to the fitness place I joined last week, for a swim and a laze in the hot Jacuzzi. Then had a latte in the sunshine and thought "how pleasant is this".
I just got home in time to think of going to the 6 o'clock service, fondly imagining it would be an Evensong, but I should have known better, Either the Church of England has reformed or changed and done away with it while I've been away, or St Andrew's is just too modern and cutting edge.
The service started with two happy clappy songs of praise and I thought "oh dear". But then someone - with a lovely voice - read Thessalonians, all five chapters of it, and it was lovely and very effective. Much more so than just reading a passage of it. Afterwards we got into groups of three and talked about it.
I walked home in the warm evening sunshine and felt I'd had a good day.
