The weather continues to be grey, cold and dank and I was glad to be indoors - warm, cosy, browsing the internet, dreaming of a new laptop until Tim turned up to take me to the Optometry Clinic at the JR hospital, an appointment I had completely forgotten about. He had the most wretched, miserable childhood; his chilly mother was busy being Queen, and his harsh, unfeeling father thought it would be a good idea to send him away to the far north of Scotland - as far away as he could get without falling in the North Sea - where he would be 'toughened up' with cold showers, open windows in all weathers, daily runs before breakfast also in all weathers, and class mates who thought it would be better to bully him than to be thought to be 'sucking up' to him. I loathe, absolutely loathe, Prince Phillip. The alternative to this terrible school - for people like Prince Charles and the aristocracy - is something like Eton College, a Public School (I think most Americans are aware that public schools here are the very best and very expensive, they are not state run government schools). Apart from its ridiculous uniform Eton is a civilised school in Windsor, and Prince Charles could have strolled across to the castle and had tea with his much loved grandmother, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. But alas, on family matters Prince Phillip always had the final word.
And now when I see newsreel pictures of Prince Charles and Camilla, with whom he has been in love for decades, I am so glad for him that finally, finally, he is happy.
