Some of you may have heard that I recently attended a Memory Clinic and have been diagnosed with "borderline dementia". I am not quite sure I understand the meaning of 'borderline' in this context; does it mean I have a disorder that is not quite dementia yet, but will be.
Anyway, I looked up 'dementia' and this is what I found.....
a chronic or persistent disorder of the mental processes caused by brain disease or injury and marked by memory disorders, personality changes, and impaired reasoning.
'Personality Changes'. Does that mean I am going to metamorphose from a sweet, little old lady (ha ha) into a vile tempered old woman no one wants to know.
I had a memory disorder when I lived in Shawnee. I left a pan on the stove and it set off the smoke alarms, all of them (I think it must be the law in Oklahoma that there has to be one in every room and in any connecting corridor) neighbours rushed in, the Fire Service appeared - which was helpful because I couldn't reach the alarms in the ceiling and they switched them off. The kitchen paintwork was a little blackened.
It is not so likely to happen here, I rarely use my cooker top, I have a Daewoo Cooker I use instead, which is a large glass bowl with a lid. that sits on the worktop, and all the controls are on the lid. I like it very much, and prefer it to the cooker top.
I might have already mentioned that I had a fall outside a few weeks ago and banged my head hard on the ground. I went for a CT Scan of my head and was told at the Memory Clinic that it was fine.
When I was in Shawnee I was very disappointed one day to find I had forgotten an event I was looking forward to, so I got into the habit then of writing reminders on post-it notes and sticking them on my fridge, a useful strategy to have now I've got dementia.
We've had some quite nice weather here, but I wonder sometimes when the autumn leaves are all going to blow away. It is alright when it is dry but I get very nervous of slipping on them in wet weather.
You do NOT have dementia. You write beautifully. I, on the other hand, DO have dementia. It is quite relaxing. Heh
ReplyDeleteI've been diagnosed by doctors and medical professionals at the John Radcliffe hospital, no less, in Oxford. But thank you for the vote of confidence in my sanity. xxx
