65 years on the throne - where have they all gone???
George VI died very suddenly on 6th February 1952, I was 13 at the time and at school (of course).
Our headmaster came round and broke the news to each class in turn. It was so sudden, we were stunned, as was in fact the nation. The Queen at the time was in Kenya and the news was relayed to Prince Philip who took her aside and broke it to her. I still remember her flying back and all the days that followed, leading to the funeral of her father.
Having dutifully given her life to the nation for 65 years she is held here in very high regard.
