It seems that Trump's proposed visit here is anticipated rather less than rapturously. John Bercow, the speaker in the Commons, has made it clear that contrary to usual practice, Trump will not be invited to address Parliament in his visit to Britain. The speaker has no doubt heard of Trump's racism and sexism, and jibes at the nasty Mexicans who bring their drugs and bad habits into the States. Instead Trump will be addressing a rally in the Midlands of cheerleaders from America's National Football League. I think I've got that right. It comes to something when a visiting head of state has to import his own friendly audience. Pardon me while I was fall about laughing.
I actually wrote the above paragraph a few days ago, I don't know why I didn't finish and publish it straight away.
Anyway it is now Monday and Donald Trump and his presidency have been dominating the news for days, but have now been overtaken by Brexit and the Minister for Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon's, announcement that she wants Scotland to have another referendum on independence. I'm having a job getting my head round all these politics - Brexit and independence for Scotland. I'm not really a fan of referendums, they cost millions, and I think such decisions should be made by government ministers, that is why we have elections, which also cost millions.
Changing the subject, today Monday has been lovely and warm and spring like. I had to go into Summertown for an appointment with the optician who is prescribing me some new glasses. She told me I have cataracts in both eyes, but I am trying to take some comfort in the fact that I will not need another check up for a year. So they can't be that bad, can they?

Yes, that is quite a thought, that a visiting head of state must import his audience...Speaking of referenda, the Oklahoma Legislature put to public vote a proposal for refining prison policy for drug offences in order to reduce gaol-crowding. The reform was overwhelmingly approved by voters. Now the legislators are passing a bill to overrule. Arrogant!
